Ecco S Classic Review

I don’t consider myself one brand type of person when it comes to golf shoes but I tend to stick to the brands I know. Nike, Footjoy and Adidas have been in my golf shoe rotation with both spiked and spike less soles. I wanted to step outside “out of the box”, but also wanting to try a more premium type of shoe. Enter the ECCO S Classic shoe – I was skeptical at first but I am now a believer.

Style: A

This is a modernized wing tip style of shoe made of full grain leather. One of the better looking shoes on the market keeping up with the likes of Footjoy and G Fore. The PHORENE midsole is a different colour than the leather upper which provides a nice contrast. You can wear these with pants and shorts - very versatile in my opinion. Style grade of A.

Comfort and Fit: B+

The comfort is unmatched in these shoes, dare I even say these are one of the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. One small draw back was the fit – I have a slightly wider foot and chose to go with the EU size of 44 (size 10-10.5 US). I found that even when tying shoes tightly as possible they were a little loose laterally. Consider sizing down if you have a slightly narrow foot. Grade B+ but very close to an A.

Waterproof: A

While these are not an official “waterproof” shoe ECCO indicates they are water repellant. One wouldn’t be able to tell the difference as I played in both wet and dryish conditions – I did not feel one drop of water enter my shoe on the wet day. Very impressed for a “water repellant” shoe – Grade A.

Grip/ Traction: B+

For a spike less shoe I was really impressed with the grip on these especially in the morning with dew filled tee boxes and fairways. My foot did not slip once and the shoes felt like a stable base especially when shifting weight during the swing. The only draw back was that mud/dirt tended to clump around the nubs on the sole quite easily. While not a big deal, I found myself hitting the sole of my shoe to loosen the dirt at least once every hole. For a spike less shoe B+ is a great grade.

Value: B

The ECCO S Classic comes in at a price of $290 CAD, a little steep for those on a budget. However, as with all Ecco shoes these are high quality shoes, excellent style and extremely comfortable. However, $300 for a spike less shoe is on the higher end of the spectrum; B for Value.

OVERALL: A-

The Ecco S Classic is an extremely well made shoe, made of high quality leather and unmatched comfort. This shoe was very close to having an A or A+ grading however, the fit and price level were factors to be considered. Ecco you have made me a believer of your golf shoes, do yourself a favor and give Ecco a try you WILL NOT be disappointed.
